Are Application Data Dashboards The Developer’s SatNav?

Serena Software has revamped its IT Dashboard tool to incorporate performance metrics of both mainframe and distributed systems.

Although this is a higher level ALM-focused product designed to provide so-called “application orchestration” functions, there is potential interest here for developers who will be able to view IT operations key performance indicators (KPIs) impacted by their own application code.

Programmers will also be able to view the impact of the wider sphere of IT operations inside a working software ecosystem as they work on new builds.

Serena suggests that visibility into IT processes — from both an application and operational perspective — has been challenging, mostly due to IT complexity. This complexity is argued to stem from enterprise use of multiple development tools, different processes, distributed teams, and multiple platforms.

The new Serena IT Dashboard offers configurable views and is now also available on tablets, smartphones, and laptops. This is DevOps IT intelligence with “BYOD” (bring-your-own-device) functionality.

RedMonk analyst James Governor sums up the position this technology sits at succinctly and accurately: “The days of one ALM repository to rule them all are seemingly behind us for now. Customers want integration across development toolsets rather than rip and replace. Enterprise IT shops prefer incremental change, in both tools and methods, which is one reason you end up with awful terms such as ScrumFall (i.e., Waterfall with a bit of Scrum.)”

Governor continues, “Like HP, Serena sees the writing on the wall for old-school development — Agile leads to better outcomes.”

DevOps is changing, and Agile development is still changing the way development shops approach new builds and existing application augmentation programs — and so, logically, we can say that ALM is changing too. The argument here is that old-school Business Intelligence (BI) is dead and a new order of Agile DevOps focused application orchestration information tools has been born.
