Edit the function of a clicker for my phone

I have a remote control that connects via bluetooth to my phone, and when the camera app is open, clicking it takes a photo (there is only one button). If I open a slideshow on my phone (google slides or Powerpoint), I would like to be able to use this remote to advance to the next slide, but instead it raises the volume on my phone. Is there a way to edit the function of the remote? It is not a brandname and did not come with any software, so the editing would need to be done on the phone itself.
