System won’t start from M.2 SSD after switching USB to SATA adapter from 2.0 to 3.0

I have a 2.5″ SSD drive connected to my HP Thin Client t640 via an (older) SATA to USB 2.0 adapter with external power adapter. I got this t640 recently and updated the BIOS a month ago (which can only be done in Windows 10, I believe). So I am on the latest HP t640 BIOS version.

I run Lubuntu 26.04 and use an internal M.2 SSD drive to boot from and use the 2.5″ SSD as the home partition.

Last week I wanted to change this older USB 2.0 cable with a USB to SATA 3.0 adapter with integrated power connection. This saves me a wall socket and a (hopefully) faster data connection. I connected it to a USB 3.1 socket.

But I soon noticed that Grub will now NOT boot anymore from the M.2 SSD drive.

I think it is difficult to talk about the BIOS without knowing what options are, therefor I tried to sum up the most important BIOS options:

First the 5 menu’s and after that imho the most important menu options. If you miss some options, let me know, and I’ll add them here.

Has anyone have an idea why the combination of the two ssd drives is not working? Both drives are shown as Legacy Boot Source, not UEFI Boot Source. Do I have anything set up wrong in the BIOS?

BTW, I dislike this HP BIOS. I have seen better ones. This one has the look and feel of a BIOS from the early 90’s. I have never seen a BIOS before where it is not possible to show the BIOS keys on the startup screen. It just isn’t user friendly and the meaning of the settings are not always clear to me (no Help whatsoever ЁЯЩБ )
