I recently had a issue with cloning a HDD to a SSD using a bootable version of Minitool Partician Wizard.
I booted into Minitool, selected copy disk and selected the source and target disk. Everything went well, the software said applied changes successfully.
After that I removed the old drive, went into the BIOS and made sure the boot drive is correct.
Windows seems to boot, but I only get a black screen with a mouse cursor. That is all. No Explorer and no Task Manager; only a cursor with a black screen. I rebooted multiple times and nothing.
After a while I booted into the software again without the old HDD. I saw that the partition letters looked wrong. The Windows part that usually has a letter of C is now E and the recovery part is F.
Could it be that Windows has the drive letters mixed up? Perhaps it tries to boot with its original config where it wants to load Explorer and the desktop and so on from the C drive however the C drive is not there.
I saw you can change the drive letters using diskpart and bcdboot, but I just want to be sure it will work. I have not done this procedure before and don’t want to lose data in the process.
