Basic Info
- OS: Laptop 1 Ubuntu 26.04, Laptop 2: Lubuntu 26.04
- Application: VLC, streaming video from one laptop to another.
Steps
I have followed this tutorial https://dev.to/apalebluedev/how-to-stream-on-your-lan-using-vlc-1h0j on streaming my camera input using VLC through HTTP, then access from another device.
When I stream on my local IP address, and a custom path, and port 8080, it starts streaming, but when I try to access, I get “Your Input ca’t be opened “.
I think this was due to specifying my IP on “path” when it’s only a route without IP. But still accessing from elsewhere just hangs without showing an image.
A related issue is that the image is frozen if I display it locally.
I am unsure what do to about it, the steps are followed as listed in the tutorial.
I tried OBS but it’s much harder, and this method makes conceptual sense to me so far, and has less steps.
Firewall
I ufw status on the receiving machine shows:
To Action From
-- ------ ----
Anywhere on wlp0s20f3 ALLOW 10.71.186.44 8080/tcp
On the sending machine:
From Action To
-- ------ ----
10.71.186.44 8080/tcp ALLOW OUT 10.71.186.171 8080/tcp
Which I had just set up via the UI. No success yet though. VLC just doesn’t display the images of the camera on the other laptop in the LAN.
Netstat
On receiving laptop:
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 30456 /run/user/1000/at-spi/bus_0
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 36135
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 29300
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 35381
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 30592
unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 34889
Any help?
