AADJ Computer Cannot Map Network Share with IP or NetBIOS Name but Can with FQDN

We are testing out purely AADJ devices (production devices are Hybrid Domain Joined) and we are running into an issue with mapping network drives over VPN. I have not been on site yet to test if it is an issue on-prem.

I am able to ping the file server using NetBIOS name, FQDN and IP address.

ipconfig /all shows the correct domain for all of the below entries:

Windows IP Configuration
    Primary Dns Suffix
    DNS Suffix Search List

PPP adapter AOVPN:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix Search List
    Connection-specific DNS Supplemental Suffix Search List
