Best way to link to biographies in MS Word

I am working on translating a historical document with a lot of references to relatively obscure people in the 19th century. I want to include three types of markup: an index of names at the end with page numbers for all mentions of each person, footnotes where there is additional context that can be given to help understand a particular passage and a set of short biographies as an appendix giving dates, occupation and any other pertinent information about each person mentioned.

The index and footnotes I can handle without a problem, but I’m not sure how best to handle the biographies. They are to be included in alphabetical order in the main body of the text so that they can be perused as a standalone secetion, but I would like to link to them from the first mention of each person (as it is not always immediately clear who is being referred to when only, say, a last name or a title is given).

Is there a way of doing this without having to go through and insert all references manually? My initial thoughts were endnotes but don’t think that really achieves what I need due to the display style and order.
