Virtualbox Windows 8.1 guest only allows guest-to-host cut-and-pasting and doesn’t allow drag-and-drop in either direction. But a Windows 7 guest on the same machine allows bidirection cut-and-pasting and drag-and-drop.
I have set up Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 as virtual machines under Linux Mint using VirtualBox (versions below).
I installed Guest Additions in both guest machines, and the Guest Extensions in VirtualBox.
I have set “Shared Clipboard” and “Drag-and-Drop” to “Bidirectional” in both guest machines’ settings.
While bidirectional Shared Clipboard works for the Win7 guest, the Win8.1 guest only allows guest-to-host clipboard sharing.
I have tried the following steps to get bidirectional clipboard sharing working in the Win8.1 guest.
- Restarted Win8.1 guest machine.
- Reinstalled Guest Additions in Win8.1.
- Reinstalled Guest Extensions in VirtualBox.
- Killed ‘VirtualBox Guest Additions Tray Application’ process and restarted using VBoxTray.exe.
- Killed ‘VirtualBox Guest Additions Service’ and process and restarted using ‘VBoxService.exe -f’.
When I try to drag files from Win8.1 to the Mint desktop, the following error appears:
DnD: Error: Requesting pending data from guest failed (VERR_IPE_UNINITIALIZED_STATUS).
Result Code:

Attempting to drag a file from the host to Win8.1 guest doesn’t work. This error is shown in VirtualBox:
DnD: Error: Leaving VM window failed (VERR_TIMEOUT).
Result Code:

Cutting-and-pasting from host to guest does not generate any error messages. It just doesn’t work.
VirtualBox version: 7.2.20
