Deutsche Telekom’s colorfully named Developer Garden platform has opened a new M2M Developer Community for machine-to-machine (M2M) communication solutions developers.
The community offers developers access to APIs, discussion forums, programming guidelines, and SDKs to develop and sell applications for the M2M space, or — as it is increasingly being referred to — the Internet of Things.
NOTE: M2M as a definition for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications generally covers both wired or wireless technologies. Examples might include telemetry for remotely monitoring environmental conditions, remote control data collection from sensors, road traffic controls, and any number of “emerging” household applications.
A smoke detector alarm can be monitored online utilizing the appropriate M2M API, then by meshing-up with Deutsche Telekom’s SMS API, it can be further enhanced with SMS alarm notification. The finished M2M application can then be directly marketed and sold via Deutsche Telekom’s M2M Marketplace.
“According to information from the OECD, around 5 billion M2M devices exist worldwide and 10 times as many are expected by 2020,” says Rainer Deutschmann, senior vice president core telco products at Deutsche Telekom. “Following the foundation of Deutsche Telekom’s M2M Competence Center and the launches of the Global M2M Association, our Partner Program, and the M2M Marketplace, the M2M Developer Community is now a further stepping stone in executing our global M2M strategy.”
Going forward, the M2M Developer Community will be further expanded by the creation of a dedicated development and test-programming environment. There will also be the possibility for mesh-ups (and subsequently, one imagines, mash-ups) with an ever-growing number of telecommunication and partner APIs and software components.
