File access denied for files added to USB drive on another PC

I have an NTFS USB drive which I move forth and back between a laptop and a desktop PC. Today I wanted to copy some files from the laptop to the desktop PC, via the USB drive.

But when I wanted to open the files on the USB drive on my desktop PC I only got “Access is denied” errors. (Files that were there before are fine.)

For a folder I got the following error:

(This is the error message from Directory Opus, but File Explorer shows a similar message.)

Attempt to get access solved that: all files in the folder are now accessible.

For individual files I didn’t have this option, and I only could open them by first copying them to a different location. So, not only could I copy them, I could also open the copies. I can also rename folders/files (still don’t open after renaming).

I am administrator on both PCs and have full access rights to the USB drive. Still I tried this: I unchecked/rechecked the full control checkbox, so that all files on the drives will be rescanned. I again get this error

for all files changed on the other computer.

What causes this behaviour and how can I avoid it?

Edit
I have switched the USB drive between PCs hundreds of times with no problems. Yet lately there were a couple of errors in the FS: files that were shown in Directory Opus, but were said not to exist when I clicked on them, or duplicate file names in the same folder.
I did a chkdsk /f /r, after which the errors were allegedly resolves, but I wasn’t sure and did a complete reformat of the drive as NTFS.
I didn’t mention this at first, but in hindsight it seems to be too much of a coincidence that the issues mentioned started just after that.
