Font color in slides created from master don’t match color of master using PowerPoint 2016

I received a slide template from a colleague and edited one of the slide layouts in the master. When I look at it in Slide Master View, it’s fine – white font on dark background. But when I close the Master View and try to use the new layout, the font is black (making it hard to see). I’m obviously doing something wrong but can’t figure out what. Any suggestions?
