How to play large Matroska (.mkv) files in Google Chrome instead of being forced to download them?

Usually, Matroska files that I open in Google Chrome (e.g. https://www.example.com/example.mkv) are played directly in the browser.

However, I noticed that some files do not play in the browser, but a download dialog appears instead. My guess is that this is related to the file size, but I can’t draw an exact limit.

Can someone tell me what exactly is causing this and how I can force even large files to play in the browser?

By the way, the download dialog that appears suggests a shortened file name with the file extension .cer. Very strange.
