How to use basic electrical template features is visio 2016?

I’m working on an old file created in previous version of Visio. I’d like to open it and/or copy so I can use the basic electrical features of Visio, for example making a 3-way connection. Does anyone know how I can do this? As far as I can tell they are the same filename (*.vsdx) but I cannot get a 3-way connection to work in the old diagram.
