I am familiar with Windows 10 (and its predecessors), and quite happy with it. Sadly, it will no longer be supported from 14 October 2025. For various reasons, I do not want to switch to Windows 11.
From searching online, I gather that Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon is one of the easiest versions of Linux for the ordinary Windows-familiar user to learn, and I am not concerned about the difficulty of learning it. What worries me is the process of changing the operating system on my 10-year-old, but trusty, desktop computer. I may make a mistake in the procedure, perhaps by omitting a step that is not explicitly stated in the guidance but which would be automatic for a tech-savvy person. And this could lead to a non-functioning computer with all saved information lost.
What I seek is a reputable online guide to making the Windows-to-Linux switch that
(1) makes minimal use of technical terms, or explains such terms as are used,
(2) understands the weaknesses of the non-tech-savvy, and
(3) meticulously includes all steps, including the “obvious” ones. Preferably, it should also include measures that would allow the bungling switcher to recover from their mistakes. Perhaps there is even a downloadable app specifically for this, which needs only minimal user action other than responding to a few prompts.
My computer usage is pretty basic: email, engaging with the web, and composing text documents. Gaming or professional applications are not needed.
Any suggestions are welcome.
