Why is deleting a folder residing in Ubuntu WSL via the Windows File Explorer much slower compared to doing ´rm -rf´ in terminal?

I tried deleting a web project folder with a deep node modules directory in Ubuntu WSL via the normal Windows File Explorer GUI. It took like 5 minutes to search all the files and delete it all (with some errors too).

I could do a rm -rf from the terminal in Ubuntu and it takes a second. Why is this happening? Does Ubuntu really delete the folder from disk?
