Summary
Recently (April, 2026), Firefox, v. 149.0 running on Windows only has started to request the Windows password when trying to view, copy or edit a site password. When and why was this security change made?
Specifics
Running Firefox, v. 149.0 on Windows Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.6466), I can use existing passwords by entering the Firefox master password (now called Primary Password) in the dialog. For example, when logging into SuperUser.com, the normal dialog shown below is shown.
However, when trying to view, copy or edit a password using Firefox Passwords settings, instead a dialog asking for Windows login credentials is shown, as below.
Previously, the same Master (Primary) Password dialog, as in the first image, would be shown again.
This behavior is not seen in that same version of Firefox running under Ubuntu 24,04 LTS, rather the Firefox Master Password is used.
Though I’ve searched the web, no answer has been found, yet.
