Why can most computing devices only connect to one wireless network at once?

All computers, laptops and smartphones I’ve tried do not seem to be able to connect to more than one wireless network at once. Is this a hardware limitation or due to the way their operating systems are programmed? I’m surprised this limitation has not been improved over the years.
