I am developing a desktop midi music application and a customer is using Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 build 1809. Our software doesn’t work but I also found that the base install of the Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 fails to play midi in Media Player with the following error:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.
The GS Wavetable Synth (Roland) appears to be on the system but there is no valid installation or output for it. If I could have Media Player play midi I’m confident the application would work, but the omission of MIDI output appears intentional. How do I get it to work?
As of this writing, the Windows 10 is ending general support and build 1809 is old. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 (21H2) works fine. However, the 1809 build has extended support through 2029 and many users will not update. How do I get the Enterprise LTSC 2019 Media Player to work using only Microsoft capability? I was able to get it to work installing a third party tool (VirtualMidiSynth) but I would like to have it work without third party tools.
