How would one go about expanding disk space on a MacBook Air M1 (2020)?

I have a MacBook Air M1 (2020). The internal SSD is soldered and therefore can not be replaced. I am looking for external storage.

There are several YouTube videos. Some indicate that NVMe is good. Others indicate that they are no better than SSD’s because the NVMe enclosure are low quality and thus are unable to relay the NVMe’s speed effectively (which makes sense if true).

Are NVMe’s worth the effort or should I stick to SSD’s?
