Problem: I want my Heading 1 style to be numbered 1, 2, 3… and I want my Heading 2 style to be numbered a, b, c… with sublevels 2, so that I get my headings like this:
1 Heading 1
1a Heading 2
1b Heading 2
2 Heading 1
2a Heading 2
...
However, there is a separator character “.” between these level numbers, making the list look like this:
1 Heading 1
1.a Heading 2
1.b Heading 2
2 Heading 1
2.a Heading 2
...
This problem is the same no matter if I use headers or just plain text lists.
What I have tried: The UI options within Writer I have found
For numbering headers, there is “Tools/Heading Numbering” and for normal lists in text there is “Format/Bullets and Numbering”. In neither of these can I find a way to specify what the list level separator should be.
I can specify a separator before and after, but these apply to the combined list number, not the separator between list levels, so i can get “X1.aY” with “X” as the before and “Y” as the after separator. That’s something else entirely, and not useful in this context.
I have also been through all the “Tools/Options” settings without finding any relevant setting.
Question: How do I specify what character to use as a list level separator?
Edit: Adding three screenshots showing the three first levels of the Bullets and Numbering settings, illustrating the effect of the “Before” and “After” separators and the fixed “.” list level separator:
