Intel Celeron J4125 max Ram support

I am trying to decide between two Synology Nas products (DS423+ and DS923+) and the CPU is where I can’t make up my mind.
DS923+ uses the AMD Ryzen R1600 (2C4T) and DS423+ uses the Celeron J4125 (4C4T). I intend to keep several (mostly idle) docker containers running on the system, so I would prefer a minimum of 16GB of ram (AMD Ryzen supports up to 32GB) but I would also really want the power efficiency, the extra cores and the embedded GPU that the Celeron offers (which however officially supports only 8GB).

However, to my surprise, many have actually used the DS423+ with up to 18GB RAM (2GB+16GB configuration).

So I am trying to figure out what is going on here, mainly:

  • Why does Intel advertises a CPU with a max memory which is much lower than it’s real capacity?
  • Are there any significant drawbacks for exceeding the max supported memory that I am unaware of (i.e a data transfer penalty or something of this sort) ? Would this put any kind of extra stress on the system?
  • What gives? What’s the catch here?
