Most universal/basic fixed width / mono font to use for emails for cross platform compatibility with formatting retention?

I find myself sometimes needing to send emails that consist of sections of the email that will retain formatting (spacing) while also having hyperlinks and such. The best way to do this seems to be through using a fixed width font like Courier or Courier New.

Here’s an example email body to give an idea of what I’m talking about:

I usually send from a Mac to Windows recipients.

What’s the most universal fixed width font to use in such cases?

Is there any data to confirm that Courier New may be the best or is at least always translated well into something that retains close formatting?
