Simply out of curiosity, I have researched server hosting and was interested about the way in which operating systems are run on different server setups. I know Linux operating systems provide a multitude of advantages for large-scale hosting over Windows. I wanted to know if these Linux servers generally run bare-metal, as a friend of mine who runs a homelab discourages me to run the OS bare-metal, or if Linux virtual machines running on Windows Server is more common. I am aware needs are different and I would do further research to identify which option fits my necessities. I am interested if anyone has an explanation as to the way in which server operating systems are chosen and used. Either personal homelabs or the way in which companies such as Microsoft run their cloud services. Again, just as a learning experience.
