Subway Fire Disrupts Rush-Hour Service to Brooklyn

Subway cables burning near the DeKalb Avenue subway station in Brooklyn have disrupted rush-hour service, emergency officials said Tuesday afternoon.

The two-alarm fire in a tunnel just north of the station temporarily blocked service between Manhattan to Brooklyn on five subway lines, including the heavily traveled Q, B and D express trains. Service on those lines stopped between Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn, as did service on R and N trains, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman said.

The Fire Department announced the fire was under control just after 6:15 p.m. More than 100 firefighters responded, and no injuries had been reported, a spokesman said.

The MTA directed riders to take other routes into Brooklyn, including the A/C and F lines or the 2, 3, 4 and 5 trains to Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center. Some F trains will be routed over the G line to Jay Street/MetroTech, near DeKalb. The agency also warned travelers to expect bus delays in downtown Brooklyn because of the fire department activity.

During the fire disruption, N and Q trains will be running along the R line between Canal Street and DeKalb Avenue, the MTA announced. Southbound B train service had been stopped at Herald Square in Manhattan. The D train operated in two sections: north of Herald Square to the Bronx, and from Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn out to Brighton Beach.

An MTA spokeswoman said the service disruptions were expected to continue at least through rush hour.
