There are a number of HDMI to USB Capture cards for Windows, Linux & Mac systems. They also recommend use of apps like OSB Studio to view and capture the contents.
In a few cases I notice HDMI to USB capture cards listed with Support HDCP (*version*) in their specifications. I am trying to understand the precise technical meaning of this term in the context of capture devices. See this snapshot of specs of one such card. It says Support HDCP 1.4
From my understanding, HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is a copy-protection protocol used over HDMI connections. However, it’s not clear what does “support” imply for a capture card.
Does it mean that it can handshake with HDCP protected Source and decrypt the content received and pass it on to the USB port as Sink so that it can be displayed in apps like OBS Studio on a PC OR does it mean rather it refuses to capture protected content as what HDCP is intended for?
Are there technical requirements or standards that define what Support HDCP entails in context of HDMI to USB capture hardware?
