What is this strange black box covering my taskbar? And how can I remove it?

Since yesterday my HP ZBook laptop is now showing a black box that obscures the taskbar and its icons.

I can click on the icons as if the box isn’t there. Multiple restarts have not removed the box. It’s very annoying.

Has anyone encountered this before?
