why doesn’t Discord show a channel-unread dot? [migrated]

Lately I’ve found that Discord won’t update itself when it’s not in focus. For some things, the in-app explanation of “to avoid wasting cycles on something nobody’s looking at” makes sense, but for others it doesn’t. In particular, there’s a little white dot that gets drawn next to channels that have unread messages. It seems to me that the presence or absence of this dot should be kept up-to-date, as it’s definitely something I like to glance at even when focus is on another window. Unfortunately, I find that it waits until I focus the Discord window to redraw those dots; here’s an example showing what I mean:

a video of a Discord window with some chat content; a cursor enters from the right and pauses, then the #off-topic channel appears in the channel list at the left and gets highlighted

(Although in this video it may appear as though the dot disappears when I move the cursor out of the window, that isn’t so; it’s just the animation looping.)

Can I configure Discord not to wait until it’s in focus to update this information?
