I need extra storage for backups and archival, and I’m deciding between two approaches:
-
Buy a bare internal 3.5″ HDD and a USB SATA docking station.
-
Buy a pre-built external HDD (i.e., drive already in an enclosure).
They look functionally similar: both end up as a USB drive on my PC. But I assume there are real engineering differences. I’m not asking for a product recommendation and I am not asking for subjective preferences; I’m trying to understand the objective trade-offs so I can decide.
What are the technical trade-offs between using an internal HDD in a USB docking station vs. a pre-built external HDD?
