ASUS TUF B550M-Plus stuck at “Press DEL or F2” for minutes and fails to auto boot — only works via Boot Override

Problem Summary

I have an ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-Plus motherboard with a Samsung NVMe SSD containing Ubuntu and Windows. After restarting, the system would not boot automatically. It stopped at the BIOS screen (“Press DEL or F2 to enter BIOS”) and required manual Boot Override to start.

Symptoms

  • System fails to boot automatically.
  • Stuck at “Press DEL or F2 to enter BIOS” for 5–10 minutes, or forever. In the “forever” case
    • Keyboard remains responsive (Ctrl+Alt+Del works).
    • BIOS usually only loads after PSU power cycle.
  • Boot Override works, but normal boot fails.

Workaround

I avoid rebooting or hibernating. I only use suspend mode in Windows 11 (24H2, fully updated). This issue has persisted for at least 6 months. When I have to reboot, I know that I’ll have a hard time.

Research

I checked similar questions on Super User and other forums, but none described this exact behavior — especially the combination of boot entries being visible only via Boot Override and the system failing silently without any error message.

Question

What could be causing this behavior, and how can I fix it?
