Can bad computer RAM silently create bad disk sectors, without causing major events such as a system crash? By what mechanism?
Specifically I am talking about bad sectors that cannot be read back, raising I/O errors when attempting to read them, and not merely corrupt file data.
I recently replaced RAM and the power supply in an older desktop and started getting pending sectors in SMART data. I was also unable to read a file but overwriting it cleared up those particular pending sectors. But later I got more pending sectors. The HDD is pretty old.
