Dynamic DNS in 2020, expected downtime on lease change [closed]

I am looking into Dynamic DNS now that most of the pros and cons written are 5 – 10 years old. The purpose would be to host a server on a residential IP address that would be expected to change at an unknown frequency, and access that server through a domain name. Assume upload bandwidth is surprisingly abundant.

From what I understand, conceptually, dynamic DNS can have connectivity issues when your dynamic IP address changes. But in practice it isn’t clear how long that connectivity issue lasts.

In recent years I’ve been able to push DNS updates across the web in minutes, with multiple records checking services updated very quickly. I first noticed when using Amazon Route 53 probably in 2016, but other more antiquated services seem to be able to update DNS records extremely quickly too, very distinct from the 72 hour wait time they suggest.

So has this concept gotten better or been alleviated with particular Dynamic DNS services? Any personal experiences?
