So I’m planning a general-purpose PC build that will use a few old SATA HDDs I have. The case holds three 3.5” and three 2.5” drives. I’ll be using an Ubuntu LTS, as it’s what I’m used to, and I’m thinking that I’ll place that on an M.2 SSD. (I’m considering the ASRock Z790 PRO RS, if it makes a difference.)
I’d like to buy a 3.5” 8TB Seagate IronWolf NAS HDD for backup storage of up to five of the other HDDs. I haven’t used RAID before, but it seems to work by pairing equal drives rather than the setup I’m thinking of.
Is there some specific RAID version or alternative I should use? Should I partition the IronWolf according to the other HDDs? I’d prefer to not manually back up, as rsync seems to do.
