I’m helping my brother in-law setting up a LAN for his MDU (Multi-Dwelling Unit). I’ve setup several simple LAN’s for others with no issues (star topology with single switch connecting wired connections and WIFI AP), but this is my first MDU LAN setup, and would like some feedback from somebody with experience.
Its a large single family home that is being converted into 4 rental units. View diagram below.
My plan for now is to have a single POE switch (might be unmanaged switch) in the basement / or other central location that is not accessible to the tenants. For each unit, run double cat 6 (one as backup), to power / connect a WIFI AP mounted on the ceiling from the switch. The plan is that each unit would have its own WIFI AP, and the network would be segmented using the switches VLAN feature. From what I’ve read, I get impression that segmenting the network this way is better than using multiple WIFI SSIDs. For the 4 WIFI APs I plan on using something like the TP-Link AC1750 for now.
The walls are not yet drywalled, so will suggest we also run cat6 for living rooms and a few other areas.
- Is having a WIFI AP for each unit overkill?
- Using the switches VLAN the right approach to segmenting the network for each unit?
- Any suggestions / concerns in regards to WIFI signal bleeding?
