For a while now Windows has wanted me to update, particularly to update to Windows 11. I don’t want to do that as I like things how they are now. In the past I have clicked the “pause updates” button to delay and this has worked for quite a bit now. However, today the button is greyed out and in the advanced options it says:
The pause limit has been reached. You’ll need to install the latest updates on this device before you can pause again.
I am hoping there is some quick registry value or something I can change that will solve things, but in doing some searching around I have yet to find the appropriate one. Please let me know if you have any idea, thanks.
As a note, I have seen some responses to similar questions say “you can’t”. This is hard to believe. In the most extreme case couldn’t I find and delete the downloaded update data and then disconnect my ethernet so it can’t redownload?
Obviously that’s not a solution I would want to do, but the point is I’d be very surprised if there was nothing that could be done assuming the goal is, single-mindedly, to stop the update.
I am the owner of this computer, and I have full administrators privileges including setting group policy and such. It is a home computer, not a work computer.
While I can understand why this question is considered to be a duplicate, I think I did want, uniquely, a solution specifically on un-greying out the pause button. In my mind, if there is a “pause limit” there should be something in the registry or somewhere that that limit is stored or the value that shows how many pauses or whatever that I’ve done so that I can either increase the limit or lower my pause count to under the limit. I’m very surprised if this doesn’t exist. But maybe that is the case, in which case the question defaults back to a general “how do I stop the update” and then it is a duplicate. So unless anyone has anything specific to say about un-greying the pause feature, I guess I will leave it closed. Oh well.
