After I logged in wrongly, why isn’t NeverSSL.com forcing a public WiFi to open login page, so that I can enter different WiFi login data?

I am facing the same hitch as this.

I recently checked into a hotel and logged in using the “free” wifi option to see how fast it was going to be and have found it way too slow so I tried to get back to the login page to choose the paid option but I cannot get back to the login page as it just redirects me to their splash page, I need to find a way to make the hotel “forget” my PC so i can log in again

I have tried going back to the IP address of the local network to see if it would load the splash page but it just instantly redirects me as it can see that my computer has already selected the free internet and therefore routes me to the splash page of the hotel.

[what I have tried so far:

  1. randomising my hardware option on the wifi settings and then reconnecting

  2. downloading a MAC address spoofer to try and change my MAC address

  3. calling the help desk of the hotel (they have no idea)

  4. forgetting the network

  5. logging on with a different profile on the PC]1

Many Reddit comments recommend neverssl.com as a pis aller, but why doesn’t neverssl.com appear to solve my problem? See screenshot below – is this page from neverssl.com what I’m supposed to be seeing? neverssl.com does not spell out whether it solved my problem.

http://neverssl.com/ Would be my go to. The reason that Facebook google etc may sometimes not work is due to the way https (ssl) works and your browser will most of the time go to the https version of the site. The website has a better description of why it works.

I know this is an ancient thread, but in case anyone runs across this and needs a fast and easy solution, simply try going to neverssl.com and it will direct you to the landing page, unless you’re already connected. I use this all the time, and it’s saved many headaches.

Use neverssl.com instead because it should work anywhere that has a capture portal, not just chain hotels!

neverssl.com is my go-to for quickly pulling up a sign-on portal 🙂

What?

This website is for when you try to open Facebook, Google, Amazon, etc on a wifi network, and nothing happens. Type “http://neverssl.com” into your browser’s url bar, and you’ll be able to log on.

How?

neverssl.com will never use SSL (also known as TLS). No encryption, no strong authentication, no HSTS, no HTTP/2.0, just plain old unencrypted HTTP and forever stuck in the dark ages of internet security.

Why?

Normally, that’s a bad idea. You should always use SSL and secure encryption when possible. In fact, it’s such a bad idea that most websites are now using https by default.

And that’s great, but it also means that if you’re relying on poorly-behaved wifi networks, it can be hard to get online. Secure browsers and websites using https make it impossible for those wifi networks to send you to a login or payment page. Basically, those networks can’t tap into your connection just like attackers can’t. Modern browsers are so good that they can remember when a website supports encryption and even if you type in the website name, they’ll use https.

And if the network never redirects you to this page, well as you can see, you’re not missing much.
