TL;DR: Is there an efficient LibreOffice update procedure for Windows (without involving third-party tools or MS Store)?
LibreOffice’s is still without a working auto-update function for Windows, so one must download updates from their website, https://www.libreoffice.org/. That was a tedious but relatively simple task until recently. From that page, you could click on a “Download” link that would offer you one download for the appropriate program files, and another download for the appropriate help files. You also had to click on another link to get the hashes so you could verify file integrity. Not a good design, but it was manageable.
Recently, however, The Document Foundation changed that process to be what seems to be even worse.
This seems to be the current process:
- Go to https://www.libreoffice.org/
- Click on the “Download” button at the top of the page (or go straight to https://www.libreoffice.org/download/)
- Scroll down (due to excessive empty space between page elements), and then click the green “Download” button in the middle of the resultant page.
- Click the “Save File” button that the web browser will display.
- Right-click the “all mirrors” link below the “Download” button.
- From the context menu, select the option to open that page in a new tab.
- Switch to that new tab.
- Select the SHA-256 hash from the page (or download the
.sha256hash file). - Copy the selection to the clipboard (if didn’t download the
.sha256hash file). - Wait for the application download to complete.
- Use a tool to verify the hash of the application download.
- Virus scan the application download.
- Switch back to the original tab.
- Find and click the “the files listings” link further down the page.
- In the resultant page, identify and click the current version number.
- Step 15 will take you to another page. On that page, click the platform.
- Step 16 will take you to another page. On that page, click the architecture (something most users may not know).
- Scroll the page to find the desired locale.
- Click on the appropriate help pack for the desired locale.
- Click the “Save File” button that the web browser will display.
- Click the “Details” button next to the appropriate help pack.
- Select the SHA-256 hash from the page (or download the
.sha256hash file). - Copy the selection to the clipboard (if didn’t download the
.sha256hash file). - Wait for the help pack download to complete.
- Use a tool to verify the hash of the help pack download.
- Virus scan the help pack download.
- Run the downloaded application installer.
- Run the downloaded help pack installer.
- Take a well-deserved nap.
Now try explaining all those steps to an 80 year old!
Is this really the current LibreOffice update process for Windows, or is there a better path to accomplish what should be a simple task (without relying on third-party tools or paying a fee on MS Store)?
